Some daffodil scouts, poking their heads up to see whether it’s safe to pop up out of the ground already. The 55° day is misleading them, so I encourage them to hold off for another three or four weeks, when the temperatures will be a little bit more predictable. I’m not sure they heard me.

So, right now (10:25 a.m. on January 22, 2024), the U.S. Constitution page at the White House site is absent/gone. That seems accurate.

1/ Early this afternoon, Merna noticed that an unusual bird had joined the hordes of house finches, dary-eyed juncos, northern cardinals, white-breasted nuthatches, etc. Not on our feeders, but scratching (what we call "hop-scritch," because a lot of hopping is involved)

This excellent specimen of a red-tailed hawk showed up in a neighbor's large oak tree and eyed me as I approached with my camera+lens. Late afternoon sun made for quite nice lighting. (I think it's a female; they're larger than the males and this one seem quite large to me.) Picture taken Nov. 26.
