Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn’t aware that some bonds are inflation protected!
January 13, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Just out of curiosity, is the interest paid out or does it just accumulate and is paid once the gilt/bond expires?
January 13, 2025 at 12:51 PM
At least that’s how I understand it
January 7, 2025 at 3:55 PM
Yeah, I think so. Borrowing is essentially selling to investors. Gilts are safe returns, so even with low interest rates there was a steady demand for these safe investments from pension funds etc. So it was a bit of a missed opportunity to have relatively low risk infrastructure investment.

I would imagine the ‘we’ would be the government/treasury/BoE and the ‘them’ would be the gilt market so pension funds and banks?

It’s a covers album….

Well, I guess think about it like this. Now someone else has that idiots $6 billion. Maybe they will do something useful with it!

Nothings guaranteed, particularly in economics. It’s entirely accurate to say likely, give him a break.
November 26, 2024 at 4:14 AM
So why do you think Oklahoma scores so low on quality of life, education and poverty? It’s all well and good pointing at investments, but are the investments tackling these key areas?
November 21, 2024 at 3:53 PM
I’m as baffled as you are. But he said he would improve things, and if you are sick of how things are, you will vote for that change, e regardless of how they plan to do it. What have you got to loose?
November 21, 2024 at 2:50 PM
I’m not saying that this isn’t a factor. It really is. But to go back to the original post which suggested that a low educated poor state voted for trump because they are stupid and poor, isn’t a great attitude to have.
November 21, 2024 at 2:41 PM
I mean, you don’t need to try to convince me. But ultimately these sort of nuanced messages don’t cut through as well as some of the blunt slogans Trump was using. A lot of the things you have said don’t necessarily help them immediately, a lot of desperate people were looking for quick solutions.

It’s not about appealing to better angels. It’s just appealing to a demographic who have been left behind by a system which doesn’t work for them. ‘We’ll make houses cheaper’ great, but what about the people who can barely afford to feed their families let alone buy a house!
November 21, 2024 at 2:05 PM
I think that the attitude to just tar an entire state like this instead of looking at the possibility that the democrats failed to win the argument, is ultimately why they lost the election!
November 21, 2024 at 1:35 PM
I don’t doubt you at all. But I can only assume Harris didn’t communicate this well enough
Otherwise people would have voted for it? I just don’t like the assumption that people are somehow stupid for not voting for the obvious candidate when really it’s a failure of winning the argument.
November 21, 2024 at 1:32 PM
That’s a fair enough argument. But at the time of the vote people who have been left behind by a system will inevitably try and change the system, even if it end up being worse. Harris didn’t offer anything different from Biden, and at the time, these people were struggling under Biden.
November 21, 2024 at 12:39 PM
And here’s the problem. Oklahoma, full of people on the very bottom rungs of society, vote for the guy who says he will change the system they don’t benefit from. It’s attitudes like this which lost the election.

And they are always blue tick twats. They are clearly bots but at a glance it gives some kind of pretence that it’s from a legitimate source.
