I will not shut up about mass transit
Pinned
Have any of the #modeltrains folks made it a goal of theirs to model and paint the 12+ designs of these that are out in the wild? I just need to know who's slutting it up. #trains
I wish G scale #modeltrains in the US were as prototypical as German modelers. Just this level of detail is often absent despite having the most room to detail with such a large train. It's clear that if I ever switch to O scale I'm 100% doing Proto48.

I so fw HO scale models taken outside for gorgeous photography. Chris Leverett over at Model Railroading Structures & Scenery fb page posted this absolutely gorgeous building. Like LOOK at that wear. It's so easy to overdo building grime but this is just perfection. #modelrailroad #modeltrains

Hey fellow #train nerds. It's Monday. I don't have anything super interesting to say other than this is a cute photo of a railroad I don't model. Love Burlington's Everywhere West lettering. That is all.

What I love about Chehalis Western garden #modelrailroad is how prototypical track action is even though the ground cover isn't trying to be to scale. It still works so well because of the simplicity of the ballast and large stones while the foreground tree debris looks like a dense thicket.

The other benefit to #3Dprinting is that you no longer have to buy trains from companies that can't help but glaze the Pedo-In-Chief with endless tacky slop #modeltrains

This is what is possible when you take an HO scale #3dprint model and scale it up for G scale railroading. Builder Chris S. took the time to scale, redesign parts in order to take this sawmill from a 1:87 to nearly 9ft long using 30kg of filament. Pretty impressive. #modeltrains

What a surprise: invest in better infrastructure and people will show up and use it. Every dollar spent on rail expansion and improvement reduces traffic, reduces road wear and improves everyone's commutes. #masstransit and #trains are mandatory for America's prosperity.
93%, that’s an A! ❤️🥹

Fingers crossed fellow #modeltrain folks that I manage to have enough free hours this holiday season to actually finish working on either GE steeple #652 or Baldwin #440. Odds aren't too great seeing as how busy I am but it'd be nice to have one of these running around the ol' xmas tree.

I really wish parts like motor blocks and drive wheelsets were more readily available in G scale #trains. And by that I mean way cheaper, & more variety. I can't believe the markup a bunch of $20 can motors are, or how steel drive wheels are $50 a wheel.

At some point I'll need to make a top 10 best weathering I've seen online because there's many repeat "offenders" who are just so fantastic at their work I can't help but keep mentioning them time and again. Once again here's Tom Foster dropping yet another set of gorgeous #modeltrain pieces.

I'm such a big fan of the Kinohara Miniature Railway and its perfect balance of #modeltrains to nature. They really have a way of making all the trackside elements look perfectly to scale while letting flowers and bushes create this upscaled illusion of deep forest and overgrowth. Magical.

An outdoor garden #modelrailroad can look so incredible when given the right balance of detail and background. Even the lack of it for a desert scene like this still breathes life into it.
October 31, 2025 at 7:25 PM
Ah the perils of #modeltrain #3Dprinting where you wake up to an overnight 15 hour print and notice a slight heat shrinkage right at a transition layer and have to just chug along because steeple cabs be printin'. I'm sure that'll buff out 😭

Insane hot take: I think the #ThomasAndFriends series should reboot entirely and go back to either Gauge 1 scale models or 3D model but the engines, scenery etc are painted to look EXACTLY like the 2D Reginald Dalby drawn illustrations from #therailwayseries a la Spiderverse and Kpop Demon Hunters

Yesterday I showed some incredible #modelrailroad weathering and I just want ya'll to know that you MUST follow www.instagram.com/paintnrust_m... on insta if you aren't already. I don't even have like 5% of his follower count, but anyone reading this should just stare in awe of his work.

Sometimes I see #modeltrain weathering so good that if it wasn't for the fingers i'd think it was real. I don't think I ever get bored by how good so many modelers are at making tiny thing look big.

Whenever I see HO miniatures displayed outside, it really showcases just how good modelers are at detail when the sunlight makes their builds downright indistinguishable from the real deal.

Hey #train nerds is there a term for a person (like me) who 1) pursues some rivet counting for themselves because they can't unlearn the research they did but 2) will NEVER go all-in on rivet counting because that's too much work for one single model and also IDGAF what others do on their railroads?

It's friday. here's a pretty garden train #modeltrailroad

If there's ONE takeaway from my account it's that cheap CNC and consumer grade rapid prototyping tech has forever changed #modelrailroad possibilities for scratch building. The #ThomasTheTankEngine fandom truly lead the charge with embracing this, allied with the #hackerspace ethos of sharing.
October 24, 2025 at 5:29 PM
In the same way that #ThomasTheTankEngine really raised the bar for Gauge 1 modeling in the 1980s Canada's Go Togo kids show has shown what's possible with modern #modeltrain DIY tech. In an incredible behind the scenes vid we see #3Dprinting make O scale come to life youtu.be/VEe3H5jtSco?...

Been obsessed with these raised bed/platforms that blend the advantages of floor level garden #modeltrain layouts with the practicality of elevated workspaces. These are great examples from a layout in Melbourne.
October 23, 2025 at 6:17 PM
I yearn for garden railroad ground cover that is this good. Outdoor #modeltrains live and die by convincing ground cover like this.
October 22, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Inside me there are two wolves: one that encourages people to make fantasy #modeltrain layouts that combine other hobbies like #anime and #warhammer40k to make cute fun #trains and the other that insists that I figure out the exact shade of a Sacramento Northern caboose in late 1941.
October 21, 2025 at 6:21 PM
The best part of outdoor layouts comes from achieving such a level of detail that it could be mistaken for reality. I love fun and quirky garden #trains like anyone else, but layouts that balance realistic ops with the magic of real greenery are just special to me. (photo of Triple Falls Lumber RR)
