Very nice afternoon at the Frick Collection. Thomas More and Thomas Cromwell are still glaring at each other across the centuries.

Patti Smith's "Horses" was released 50 years ago today. For the Wall Street Journal, I wrote about the album on its 30th anniversary.

"Yeah, it was mission accomplished, a culmination of all the stuff I was doing in the early '70s. I never dreamed I'd do another album." tinyurl.com/3bk4k2yc

Of "Raven and Crow: The Mythology, Art and Science of our Favorite Black Birds" by Ellen Williams, Booklist writes: "In a wonderful integration of art, mythology, science, and storytelling, the author delves into the outsize role these two large black birds play in human consciousness."

Grateful to Meredith Anthony and "Deadly Pleasures" for the glowing review of my "A Song for Katy Shayne." She says it's "poignant and full of heart, intriguing and deeply satisfying," praising it as "real and engaging and exciting." My sinister riff on Steely Dan delighted her. Grade: A.

Van Morrison turns 80 today. At his best, he was untouchable. We spoke a few times across the years. He was feisty, but fine.

I once asked him who he thought would like a particular album he’d made. He said he thought it would appeal to the people it appealed to.
