At the 9/5/2025 press conference announcing the renaming of the Department of Defense as the Department of War, Hegseth used the similar phrase, "maximum lethality, not tepid legality." That's "maximum," not "reasonable," "necessary" or "justified." Reference: www.newsweek.com/trump-depart...
Trump signs order to recreate Department of War
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday, renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War. Newsweek's live blog is closed.

Can @kenwhite.bsky.social or another criminal law practitioner weigh in on whether a federal habeas corpus petition is a viable means of getting him out before December considering the 1A free speech and 8A excessive bail issues involved?

At least she didn't call anybody deplorable. I remember when the GOP thought that term was an outrage.

Also, in the Kubrick film, Dr. Strangelove was a German - American political scientist, who many people thought was a thinly-veiled Kissinger years before Nixon made him his NSA. He wasn't a natural scientist at all. Maybe Thiel should choose a different fictional character like Dr. Moreau.

How long before BW brings back Lara Logan and puts her behind the CBS Evening News anchor desk?

Of course, no one can point to any authorization from Congress for the Treasury to put Trump's image (or that of any living person) on a coin. They're just counting on no one stopping them from doing whatever they want.

The Teamsters endorsed Nixon in 1960 as payback for JFK and RFK Sr.'s roles in Senate investigations of the union's corruption under Jimmy Hoffa, Sr. They endorsed Nixon again in 1972 after he pardoned Hoffa and Reagan and GHW Bush. A long history of being Republican-friendly on the national level.

Apparently, DJT's orders are still secret. Clinton's rules of engagement were supposedly crafted to protect CIA officers from facing murder charges under US law. I doubt there is any credible attempt to apply rules that give the civilians involved the ability to surrender under Trump's orders.

Down the chain of command the CIA and its Latin American military allies generally ignored the rules of engagement in each of the 15 ADP shootdowns and had some serious communications issues the day the missionaries were shot down. Now, the US is going straight to lethal force.

These attacks echo the CIA's Airbridge Denial Program, 1995-2001, which culminated in the Peruvian AF's shootdown of a plane carrying American missionaries, leaving 2 dead and 3 wounded. The ADP's rules of engagement required attempts at forcing suspect planes to land before using lethal force.

Either the U. of Fla. School of Law didn't bother to include Kent v. Dulles (1958) and Aptheker v. Secretary of State (1964) as part of the con law syllabus or Rubio slept through class that day. This is all a replay of McCarthyism and the MAGAs are the Leo court will come to different conclusions.

In a sane world, Kilmeade's outrageous statement would be covered by every major media organization and condemned on multiple newspaper editorial pages. At this point, it's not even on their radar.

Leon Trotsky wasn't killed by Fascists. George Lincoln Rockwell wasn't killed by Communists. Whether it's due to rivalry or a desire to purge ideological impurity, you can't rule out people who are apparently in alignment with an assassination victim as potential perpetrators.

Where is the condemnation of this outrage from American religious leaders, the "pro-life" movement or newspaper editorial writers? I'm hearing crickets.
September 13, 2025 at 7:46 PM
Father, you are practically a lone voice in the Church speaking out against this. The Fox studio is about a 7 min walk from St. Patrick's Cathedral, but where is Cardinal Dolan's condemnation of this call for involuntary euthanasia from Kilmeade (who apparently was raised Catholic)? Or any bishop?

Does anyone find it odd that his online bios don't say where he got his bachelor's? Even his LinkedIn profile elides this part of his education, although it lists his high school. Can one enroll in NIU grad school without one? Is he embarrassed b/c it's a joke ... or a good school disdained by MAGA?

(My thoughts in the Forward about why anyone who cares about Israel or the Jewish people should be speaking out on Gaza)
Gaza is starving. Where are the American Jewish leaders?
A fear of being labelled antisemitic still deters American Jews and Jewish institutions from taking a position that is morally correct.

There is also a new suit challenging nonracial, socioeconomic preferences based on census tracts for admission to Boston's exam schools. The right wing seems to regard any attempt to promote social mobility as a violation of natural law & thus unconstitutional. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/07/17/m...
Parents’ group sues over BPS exam school admissions, alleging discrimination against white students - The Boston Globe
The same group also sued the district over a zip code-based admission policy it used during the pandemic.

As happy as I am to see that none of the other members of my state's delegation voted for this abomination, I'd really like to hear ‪@jahimes.bsky.social explain voting with the GOP on this. Too many finance bro friends and donors in favor of it, maybe?
