What really impresses me (which is probably the wrong word because I'm a dumbass) is the range of his work. Think about the differences in the movies Spinal Tap, When Harry met Sally, A Few Good Men, Misery, Stand by Me, and The Princess Bride. He definitely wasn't predictable in that respect.
