Bsky folks and #EconSky,

The cool people at @worksinprogress.bsky.social invited me to write an article for their December issue about the fascinating story of innovation in US dairy genetics. Roughly based on some of my research in this area.

My highlights:

Let's break down what 25% tariffs between the US, Canada & Mexico could mean, based on our deeply integrated supply chains and economies. 1/
Brainard is right about the risks of sweeping, poorly designed trade barriers. But the argument would be more powerful had Biden chosen not to keep 300$ billion of Trump's tariffs on products from Christmas lights to baby clothes we'll never manufacture in the US.

A new paper from a pair of Alberta academics makes it clear that the cost of the carbon tax is far less than its critics would like to pretend.

The truth is coming out on the carbon tax
The truth is no match for an honestly told lie. Witness the disconnect between what we know about the carbon tax in Canada and the way it’s perceived by large swathes of the public.

The bottom line: Tariffs won’t lower food prices—they fuel inflation and burden producers, consumers, and taxpayers.
