Thrilled and grateful to see my art in the US edition of Kristen Loesch’s stunning new gothic horror novel THE HONG KONG WIDOW, published by Berkley, an imprint of Penguin Random House. 10 pieces sprinkled across the novel as part of the creepy narrative.

Available online and in a store near you!

Our hearts are very full after Amsterdam ❤️

Some quick sketches, watercolors, mixed media experiments, and alien robots while on the road.

I think I have subject matter ADHD whereby I'll be working on some technique or thing and then I'll FOMO and jump ship to some other thing. Anyway, it's faces lately, in this delicious palm green ink muddled with water.

Spent the afternoon drawing faces with the 7yo. A quick study from an internet reference, using this gorgeous vintage Cartier fountain pen from my mom ❤️

I'm not religious, but last year we went to 蓮花宮 to ask the gods (and there were a whole assembly of them inside) to watch over us in the Year of the Dragon. Now that the year is almost over, we returned to 蓮花宮 to 還神, literally to repay the gods for good year. And to do a sketch:

Some mysteriously nondescript buildings dappled with afternoon light. Admiralty, opposite Island Shangri-La. Did some sleuthing and the buildings are unmarked on Google Maps—what they are?? 🤔🤔🤔

Wrong answers only.

Thanks, Elizabeth!! It's some kind of observation tower at a beach here in Hong Kong. In context it's a bit meh with the weird jumble of architectural styles but in isolation on paper it looks a lot more dramatic!

2) Scrawling some random stuff across the blank page with a thick red marker is the fastest way out of analysis paralysis.

3) Look at things through the lens of experimentation and observation—it's not scary if everything is just learning. There's nothing to judge if you're just making notes.

Some reminders for getting back into the practice of art after the holidays:

1) Stop thinking about creating the next "masterpiece".

Here's a little #artvsartist.

Thankful to have been able to afford the time and space to make and share are—not everyone gets the opportunity to do so, so I'm extremely grateful. 🙏

We're on the road again from tomorrow so here's to a very Merry Christmas and an art-filled New Year! ❤️

My first 500 followers! I wanted to get a few words in before the imposter syndrome kicks in 😂

Building up a profile here as a painter when most of you know me from the old bird place as a writer feels a little strange but I've gotten nothing but love and support—thank you thank you 🙏❤️

As much as I love this little plaza on Braemar Hill, the place is starting to look a little post apocalyptic 😅

Quick thumbnail note & a bit of paint.

Some quick experiments with conté and watercolor. The crayons blend and get all smudgy when you add a little water—which I loveeeee. An old lighthouse from a reference photo and the view outside my window.

I bought a 20yo minidisc player off Carousell at 2am the other day (as one does). I was so excited to be able to show my kids what an MD was, to make mix tapes together. And then I Googled “how to export music into files”—

Let’s just say I’m putting my minidisc dreams on hold…indefinitely.

Ok so I think I’ve found the old lit twitter writing gang—but where are the Bluesky #painters and artists? Say hello if you’re around! 👋

I love gouache and making a huge mess and telling stories through words and pictures. Would love to see what you’re working on!

I love the storytelling side of painting and work mainly in watercolors, gouache, and ink. I sketch as a form of note taking. I'm currently working on an art commission with an amazing novelist on a novel coming out in 2025—can't wait to share more when the time comes!

I mean I guess I could've gone with something else but anyway here's a self portrait of me wearing my 5yo's Halloween costume. And a digital egg.

Just saying hi again to all my writer and painter friends. Previously submissions editor at SQL, EIC of The Bureau Dispatch, and now painter of things.

In hindsight maybe getting the kids a face paint set was not the soundest of ideas. Wishing all my writer, sketcher, painter buddies a very Merry Christmas and a productive, art-filled New Year!
