For my fellow Emet-Selch, #FFXIV, and Shoebill Stork fans... I found this at a pottery store in the LA Little Tokyo Galleria mall.

I am going to be forever sad that we didn't get this version of Future Trunks in Dragon Ball Super. Xenogears Future Trunks is super badass. #DragonBall #FutureTrunks

80s anime like "Clash of the Bionoids" (Macross movie) & "Warriors of the Wind" (Nausicaa) were cut up messes. TV tried to reproduce new Robotechs but flopped. Only Akira had a deserved general following. Meanwhile, my friends were on Amigas subtitling shows & fansubs caught on across fan clubs.

Mid-1980s was an odd time. Fandom was on the rise via clubs and zines, but US companies wouldn't license "too adult" anime. Transformers (actually #anime! ) on after school & the pinnacle was "Transformers the Movie" which I saw ~20+ times. Voltron, w/ another Pink Princess, seemed like a rehash.

Everything changed in 1985 when the series that exploded #anime fandom arrived: Robotech (Macross). I was obsessed. I would run home every day from school to watch it live. I joined the Robotech Fan Club, had pen pals, & talked about it on the proto-internet Q-Link. There were others like me!

Star Blazers (Yamato) was another amazing #anime series on TV from 1979-1984. I watched pretty much everything released of Leiji Matsumoto's in the USA in the 70s/80s. He was unique at the time for his female characters; Queen Esmeraldas was my favorite from Harlock.

Video rental stores became huge and I was able to find more series like Captain Harlock in the 80s. I remember the days before #anime became "something to avoid" for kids, which happened in the 80s when religious right found out about it (due to the R-rated stuff making its way to the USA).

Another #anime series I watched as a child in 1978 was Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman). Again featuring a pink princess, haha. I saw Star Wars on opening day with my dad and mom, and anime sci-fi series featuring an amazing woman like Princess Leia were inspiring to me as a young girl.

I have been into #anime most of my life; it all started with a show on TV called Spaceketeers in 1978 (Starzinger in Japan). Much better IMO than Looney Toons. I idolized the pink Princess of the Moon, Aurora. I now know in my old age that it was Leiji Matsumoto's take on "Journey to the West".

We went to the Oakland Zoo for Zoolights today. It was a lot of fun and there are tons of dinosaurs! Highly recommended. We also had dinner at Fenton's Creamery which is amazing 💖
