Not to mention that housing prices have been going up in many of the more affordable metros because they are also not building enough new housing. Chicago, where I live, has been seeing prices increase faster than the national average, but we're still not building much new housing.

It's weird to read this because a similar happened to me Saturday in a completely different part of town. I was walking on the 606 and a man on a Divvy punched me in the shoulder before riding away yelling at the top of his lungs, clearly not mentally well.

I know it's not the main point, but, but do people in NY know that if you have a car you barely use you can just sell it? You don't actually need to leave it parked on the street collecting parking tickets until the city impounds it.

Not to mention that calling Chicago "Democrat-led" is just factually inaccurate. Municipal elections in Chicago are non-partisan.

The void is sticky and humid, like a Midwestern summer.

Seems like it would be illegal in two party consent states (like IL). Maybe it would be legal if you begin every call with a disclaimer? "This call is being monitored in order to trail our AI overlords. By staying on the line, you consent to have your voice recorded and used for this purpose."

Here in Chicago, the feds are sneaking around in the suburbs and outlying neighborhoods, grabbing whoever they can get their hands on while trying to avoid protesters and media. Funny way to act if you actually think you're liberating the city from hardened criminals.

I also remember reading stuff along the lines of "mask mandates don't matter because we won't/can't enforce them" but my actual experience here in Chicago was that like 95% of people voluntarily complied with the mandates and then most people stopped masking the instant the mandates went away.

I feel like "biker" for someone on bike is becoming more normalized. As someone who both bikes for transportation and does 30+ mile recreational rides, I tend to refer to myself as a cyclist but sometimes "biker" slips out. (I'm also in Chicago.)

Also, they were going to pay him 520 million over 10 years for 160 episodes? Am I reading that right? Over *half a billion dollars* for 160 episodes of Dr. Phil??

I hope this actually happens. It's not clear if the city has funding secured for this (they did not as of January 2025). The current timeline to start construction in Q4 2026 has already been pushed back at least once (an earlier timeline had construction starting this year).

I wondered the same thing when we got one of these blatant scammers at my door a couple years ago. "We're from ComEd and just want to make sure you're getting the best rates." They were definitely not from ComEd.

The intersection of Humboldt and North is pedestrian hostile and needs a complete redesign, but I'm guessing that's not in the budget. At a minimum, the lights and stop lines on North should be moved outward so that traffic stops before the service drives.

It seems to prioritize proximity to stuff over how comfortable it is to walk to said stuff. The neighborhood here I grew up in Evanston has a walk score of 67, but there's lots of stuff you can comfortably walk to if you're comfortable walking ~1.5 miles.

One theory I've seen that sort of makes sense is that the purpose is to allow Trump to "make deals" with foreign leaders in exchange for lowering tariffs. But that only works if a "deal" with Trump is actually worth something. If he can just reverse it tomorrow, why would anyone negotiate?

20-something me: "I bet it would be fun to freeze this piece of fruit in liquid nitrogen and then pop it directly into my mouth." It turned out to be less fun than anticipated. (I was fine, just lost some skin from my tongue and the roof I my mouth.)

As someone who grew up in the US, I also don't get it. I hate the feeling of being trapped in a drive thru line with cars in front of and behind me. Why would I put myself through that when I can just go inside?

Yeah, it's not like anyone is going to pay *8 figures* to live in a dense neighborhood with transit, shopping, and restaurants within easy walking distance (Lincoln Park,Chicago).

Please, tell me more about these "fanzeens", as you call them.

I grew up in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, which has a much better traffic safety record than Chicago proper. One noticeable difference is the speed of traffic. Evanston has no highways and most streets are narrow (by US standards). Chicago has highways and many wide 4+ lane streets.

What better use for land adjacent to a mass transit stop 15 minutes from the city center than a large surface parking lot?

In the Midwest, bagels are commonly referred to as "Holy Rolls" after the popular "Hole-E-Roll" brand of bagels. A sandwich consisting of a slice of lettuce between mayo and peanut butter on a bagel is known as a "Holy Trinity".
