RIP Tatsuya Nakadai. An acting titan who graced the screen in several masterpieces throughout his long and illustrious career. His juvenile devotion for a nightclub owner, so delicately portrayed, is one of the reasons why I love When a woman ascends the stairs.

Happy John Guillermin centennial! His lavish adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile is one of the most enjoyable films I’ve seen, my sort of “comfort movie”. The cast and the production values are top-notch and the mystery is so pleasantly involving.

Happy Richard Burton centennial!!! He could be elegant or vulgar, arrogant or beaten-down, cerebral or passional, but always mesmerizing. Look back in anger was a cultural watershed, and Burton’s portrait of an “angry young man” prefectly captured the spirit of the moment.

RIP Pauline Collins. A lovely actress, whose sparkling eyes and expansive personality bewitch me everytime I see her, be it as the housewife looking for adventure in Shirley Valentine, or in supporting roles in films such as Your will meet a tall dark stranger or Quartet. She will be missed.

Happy Michel Bouquet centennial! He was a great, elegant actor who incarnated French bourgeoisie’s vices and virtues under such masters as Chabrol and Truffaut. He was perfect as the middle-age man torn between jealousy/guilt and his bourgeoisie ways/morals in La femme infidèle.

RIP Diane Ladd. I first saw her in a brief but memorable scene in Chinatown and have been under her spell ever since. From Polanski and Scorsese to Lynch, she left a mark of elegant beauty and strenght. A class act.

RIP Tchéky Karyo. A character actor in the best French tradition, I like specially his portrayal of historical characters such as Nostradamus in the same title film and Molière in Le roi danse.

Happy Lee Grant centennial! A great actress who survived the HUAC witch hunt and became a driving force of committed filmmaking, both in front and behind the camera. Love her breakdown scene in In the heat of the night, a powerful moment by an actress whose heart was in the film.

Happy Robert Hardy centennial! From The spy who came in from the cold, to Sense and sensibility, to the Harry Potter saga, he was a great character actor in the best British tradition.

Love how beautifully Avelina Prat films the acts of kindness of everyday people in The Portuguese house (Una quinta portuguesa), very much a la Kaurismäki. Delicately mysterious, luminously cozy, it lifted my heart with its umpretentious portrayal of basic decency.

RIP June Lockhart. Love her as the kind, wholesome Lucille Ballard in Meet me in St. Louis (and as the Robinson matriarch in Lost in space). One of our last links to Hollywood Golden era, she celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this year.

RIP André Oumansky. From Henri-Georges Clouzot to Sofía Coppola, he worked with many interesting directors during his long career. He was electrifying as the hidden villain in René Clement’s Les félins.

Happy Phyllis Dalton centennial! One of my favorite moments in Lawrence of Arabia was Lawrence enjoying his majestic white costumes in the middle of the desert. From Our man in Havana to Doctor Zhivago to Voyage of the damned to Much ado about nothing, her work was always great.

Happy Angela Lansbury centennial! I love not just as an actress, but as you love someone who has shown you warmth, kindness and grace. Her performance in Gaslight has to be one of the most electric film debuts ever. The aplomb! The cheekiness! I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

RIP Diane Keaton. Effortlessly charming, deliciously neurotic, elegantly witty, quintessentially New Yorker, she was my dream woman. An era-defining actress, she redifined romantic comedy heroines forever in Annie Hall. A beautiful legacy for a beautiful lady.

RIP Claudia Cardinale. Her natural beauty and Mediterranean temperament were evident since her very first roles in films like I soliti ignoti. A down-to-earth goddess with the most pristine smile.

I saw it last month in the Lima Film Festival and liked it very much! Loved the elegant pace of the political thriller, the period reconstruction and the framing (far from Mendonça’s usual trippy style). Moura is Oscar worthy.
I loved Kleber Mendonça Filho’s THE SECRET AGENT; politically trenchant and highly emotional, full of surprises. It's set to open in New York on Nov. 26 and in Los Angeles on Dec. 5, then expand nationally. I hope it finds a big audience.
