One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.

I am not sure that all games aren't introduced in this way in the rule books, but people often zoom by the 'game fundamental' bits, and board games are typically learned by an experienced player introducing you to it and the rules for it.

In any case, you have piqued my curiosity.

I am greatly intrigued by this question. Back in grad school (a decade ago) I researched and taught games and learning, but how game mechanics can be used to improve learning. I don't recall any work on how games were taught back then, but it is definitely a ripe topic.

My similar practice is avoiding "consume" to describe engaging with media. I read, I watch, I listen. None of that uses up anything the way consumption does.

Soup does confound the chopsticks.

I know folk that are big fans of the titanium long handled spork, but they are mostly long haul hikers.

I have travel chopsticks in case of emergency. Sushi emergency.

Have I told you the line I use with students?

“Your professors are gigantic nerds and we just want an excuse to nerd out with you”
