Nature, microscopes, begonias, orchids, pollinators so much in the world to get joy from. Just trying to share some here.
Today I made a similar display in our office corridor at the Museum. :) Guido Jozef Braem also has books on Paphiopedilum and Phragmipedium if those interest you. (I know our hallway is pretty boring… I try to jazz it up…)

Also Dave Sorokowsky gave an interesting presentation on Paphiopedilums with a focus on the alba/album types.

Two of the flasks were part of the show table at the @manhattanorchidsociety meeting last night. Used Guido Braem’s new Tolumnia book for some info on the species.

One note to self, the next time I try growing orchids from seed get smooth jars, not the ones with fancy patterns on the outside. Other than that, I have tons of germination and I think roots are starting to develop!!

My little orchid chandelier. Maybe medium sized. Catasetum seccatum, one of Darwin’s favorites! Just starting to open. 💚 #NatureNearMeUA

The J&L Microclinium aurorae from Deep Cut in Feb popped! Cute ball of flowers.

Grown in a glass vase with the top half covered with a sheet of glass. About 18 inches from two of the BotanicslLEDs’ Spike producers

I give it a spritz of water in evening. My fertilizing schedule is pretty irregular.

Moving some Hispaniella henekenii orchids from flask to twig. They are native to a cactus scrub environment in the DR and Haiti. So shifting them from the humid flask environment to a dry environment. The lid will be opened over weeks to acclimated to room humidity.

Great day with teachers in Fort Tryon Park today. Exploring #NatureNearMeUA Plant behaviors, pollinators, trophic levels, producers, consumers, parasitism, form and function… so much in the natural world that science concepts help us understand! Or try to! :)

Yesterday I was exploring, looking for tiny things in Queens with @lovisalden. Today I’m trying to keep small things from growing when I plant the seeds from these orchid seed pods. I hope to plant in about a week. 🤞🌱 #NatureNearMeUA

Do plants behave? What is behavior? I noticed this week that the “sterile flowers” (the ones that don’t have pollen or make seeds) on the oakleaf hydrangea are moving! They have all flipped upside down! And are turning green! Why are they moving? Why is the color changing? Is this “plant behavior?”
