Sometimes we forget to focus on the positives - like getting a paper back with minor revisions 🥳 - so today we had cupcakes (in the theme of the paper) decorated as landslides 🪨😆! Now off to spend the afternoon in a continued battle with ArcPro and Python..........

Today we got to see the first core ever recovered by the ocean drilling programme (then DSDP) - there is so much material in the repositories just waiting to be explored! The value of #IODP goes far beyond the initial expeditions that collect these data ⛴️🌊🧪

A few of us from @anzic.bsky.social are at the #IODP 21st Century Drilling Workshop this week - learning all about the different facilities at the Gulf Coast Repository, thinking about using legacy data for future science projects, and getting to look at some cores! 🧪🌊

Summary schematic diagram of organic carbon (OC) flux and distribution in an idealised submarine canyon-channel-fan turbidite system, similar to the Kaikoura-Hikurangi depositional system. Frequent events (high recurrence interval) allow young terrestrial and marine OC to be flushed laterally into the deep ocean via submarine canyon(s) without a direct river connection. (A) Interpreted inter-event sediment and OC accumulation, with the submarine canyon acting as a charging capacitor. (B) Intra-canyon mass wasting (due to physical disturbance, e.g., earthquake ground-shaking), with measured intra-event OC lateral flux and partitioning along a fine-grained turbidity current and resulting turbidite deposit shortly following deposition. Schematic cores below the seafloor show idealised Kaikoura event bed (KEB) deposits.

Didn’t run it but spent yesterday working as event medic for a 19 km race (The Goat) along the slopes of Mt Ruapehu - pretty epic scenery for a race! Need to come back and run it one day 🌋Off for a mountain bike ride today!

Today’s run featured a >193,000 yr old maar (Lake Pupuke), one of the oldest volcanic features in Tāmaki Makaurau, and a lovely view of Rangitoto, the youngest (and largest) volcano in the Auckland volcanic field (~1500 yrs). Plus some angry swans for added excitement!

Managed to sneak in a run to the beach this morning before the rain arrived. Lovely outcrops of Miocene(?) sediments along the shore, and stunning views of Rangitoto volcano offshore. Pretty good start to the day! ☀️🏃‍♀️
