Very happy to briefly have Tim @ruehlig.bsky.social back in Berlin for a discussion on what’s next for the European and German agenda on China and critical technologies, given the new Commission and Trump’s impending inauguration.

"Biotechnology, Security, and Sovereignty: Strategic Priorities for Germany and the EU" - that was the last discussion round we hosted in 2024 in our @gppi.bsky.social project on Critical & Emerging Technologies.

Quite the panel at FES yesterday on Sahel policy. Credit to ministers Schulze and Pistorius for making time to stay for the entire discussion.
Overall, strong agreement on staying engaged, but also a lot of "we need to square the circle and do it very carefully"...

General elections in the DR Congo are scheduled for 20 December. This week's Continent headline may not prove all that hyperbolic about the importance of how this country is governed - not just for its almost 100 million citizens, but also for the wider world.

Moritz Schularick's view on de-risking set out at the #SchmidtLecture hinges strongly on an - as of yet unpublished - @kielinstitute.bsky.social study that puts the cost to 🇩🇪 of a sudden, hard decoupling from 🇨🇳 in the event of a crisis at 4-5% of GDP. That is still a large number, but 1/

Interesting proposition in Gita Gopinath's @kielinstitute.bsky.social Geoeconomics conference keynote: 🇪🇺 is uniquely exposed to geoeconomic fragmentation, but also uniquely placed to build resilience thanks to strengths in both manufacturing and innovation. 1/

Pithy and glum observation by Ivan Krastev on new @ecfr.bsky.social survey: Many in the non-Western world "care not so much about the state of the world, but about their place in the world."

The Commission recommendation actually states explicity that the list addresses one of four risk categories, namely technology security and leakage. Doesn't mean resilience of supply chains, incl. energy security), critical infrastructure, and economic coercion get deprioritized.

Thanks to FES (sadly not here yet I believe) for an insightful Tiergartenkonferenz #TGK23

A recurrent theme was doubling down on EU cooperation in those areas where scale makes a key difference - important reminder notably in the field of economic security and industrial policy
