Smallwood came very close in NL. After announcing his retirement in '69 he ran for the leadership against John Crosbie and ended up winning. In the election he got 20 seats against 21 for Moores and one independent, and then had to step down.

There has always been a rural/urban divide here, pre-1934 it was between Merchants vs the rest, the difference now is what it represents. The Tory strength on the Avalon is a holdover from Confederation, it seems like it has taken 76 years for ideology and left/right spectrum to move the lines.

My initial thought was "they should be forced to watch Threads" but would they even believe what the reality of a nuclear war would be? They're so delusional.

The Liberals have lost a lot of incumbents that have been stalwarts, while some are on the Avalon (as you rightfully pointed out should be safer) they're going to have a tough time winning them back in the rest of the province.

I found this paper in an old family book. Not sure if it was my Grandfather's or Great-Grandfather's but I was surprised how much they obviously didn't like Coaker. Neither were involved in the fishery and were Catholic but was still unexpected.

Where was that announced? I went through the road projects for 25/26 and 26/27 and didn't see anything.

Yup, but just pointing out that Canadians do not use the British spelling 100% of the time. Yoghurt, programme, aluminium, etc.

Things like Tire vs Tyre, Curb vs Kerb, come to mind pretty quickly where most use the American spelling

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer BUT I have to say thank you for skeeting about Dungeon Crawler Carl. Picked it up after seeing you talk about it and it's a lot of fun!
