That said, nothing the government says in this realm can be taken at face value right now. And there's an argument that the New Mexican judge's actions, if true, are still morally sound even if technically illegal. Shades of the Underground Railroad or hiding Jews from the Nazis.

Yeah, just providing the requested context, not equating the two legally or morally, necessarily. The Wisconsin case sounds more egregious, which is probably why it's receiving more media focus.

Here's a different article that talks about the details of the case. The government alleges he confessed to destroying a phone belonging to one of the "suspected gang members". His wife is alleged to have encouraged the deletion of one of their Facebook accounts.
