Burning coal and oil was always a bad idea, it’s incredibly more damning to keep doing it now that we have seen the effects over the last centuries, and especially the last decades.

In short, knowing more as a society makes individuals look stupider by contrast.

It’s called “cultural disembedding” or “normative dislocation”: the idea that when long-standing social structures, narratives, and institutional anchors erode, people don’t necessarily become less intelligent - they lose the frameworks that once made behaviours legible, cohesive, and predictable.

I think that it’s more a “collapse of the social order“ kind of things. People aren’t stupider, but societal change permanently displaced historical alignments, resulting in people’s behaviour appearing more stupid, because references and habits are gone, and habits mostly look like rationality.
