Well I have had some success with juniper, but I wanted a Japanese maple. For me, that's a real bonsai. The seeds germinated but I couldn't keep it alive.

The Hague. The Peace Palace had no tours so I went to Scheveningen beach, a place so hard to pronounce that it served as a shibboleth during the war. Fifty years ago, I walked these dunes, feeling the most free I have ever felt, having just learned of my scholarship to study in Amsterdam.

Utrecht. The famous Rietveld-Schroeder house from 1924. using principles of De Stijl art movement. Minimalist. Interesting moveable interior walls. An elementary school from the early 1900’s, designed with children in mind. A reed thatched roof. Row houses dating to 1651.

The bobcat again, outside my front door. This time with two kittens. I think she is hunting rabbits, of which there are a lot in the neighborhood.

The inside of my Toto toilet. It needed some new parts. It was installed by the previous owners of my house. They are common in Japan but not so much here. I wouldn't want to be without it. But they cost $7500 now. A Toto washlet is much cheaper (under $500).

Brisbane is beautiful. Museums with indigenous art, an artificial beach right downtown, palm trees. But it does get hot!

The Hippie Trail. Overland from London. Here is a photo from January of 1973, showing the snow in Turkey, as seen through the windshield of our freak bus. This was the main road across Asia from Istanbul! Like others, I made it to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal. Unforgettable.

Autumn, France. I was amused by this depiction of the Magi, all asleep in one bed, wearing their crowns, and being instructed in a dream by an angel.

Fuji Pension. Skiing at Maduarao in 2017. I thought we were snowed in, but Takeshi started up his van and we were the first on the lifts at 8:30. Like the Aussies say, you gotta have an advencha before demencha. Over a foot of fresh powder, and it kept on snowing heavily all day. Incredible.

Hiking in the Lake Country (2018). From Keswick I went down the Borrowdale valley, through the Great Wood, past signs advising of badgers. Good views across Derwentwater to Cat Bells. At Rosthwaite I hiked up to a lovely tarn, made a loop through meadows and peaks. Found a pub with a blazing fire.

York. Constantine was proclaimed emperor here in the year 306. And so began Christianity’s fateful alliance with political power, forgetting that part of the Magnificat about the mighty being cast down from their thrones. The Romans were here in 71 CE, and bits of the wall date to that time.

Heartbeat! In Aidensfield, aka Goathsland. This is where the TV series was filmed. My bus broke down, so this seemed to be a good place to wait, with a pint of Timothy Taylor’s.

Whitby, where Captain Cook sailed from. Seagulls screaming as they try to open a sandwich they had nicked, still in its wrapper. The Abbey started as a place for both men and women in 657, became Benedictine, destroyed by Henry VIII). Illegible headstones, but what a view if you are dead!

Whnity.. Monument to Cædmon, the earliest English poet whose name is known. The father of English sacred song, he claimed to have learned in a dream how to compose. Died 684.

Many Biblical stories are myths written many centuries later than the events they purport to describe. Saul, David and Solomon existed, but their kingdoms were insignificant. Northern kings like Ahab and Jehu were much more well known to other cultures. The black obelisk has a reference to Jehu.
