I wonder why suddenly a great number of my students sound like erudite and boring encyclopedia entries in their online communication. It's a real head-scratcher.

Today was the last class day of new material in my Introduction to Literature class, and, once again, I finished with my favorite poem of all time:

2024 poetry recommendations! Lists!

Please share a recommendation for a recent book of poetry. We all know the big lists and the prize lists and finalists. But that's barely scratching the surface.

How about some recommendations that are a little lower profile you'd like to boost?

So long National Adoption Awareness Month. Remember, it's ok to be aware the rest of the months as well. #Adoption #adoptee

Season's Greetings!

If I had known, while writing my book, My Life in Brutalist Architecture, that November was Adoption Awareness Month, I absolutely would’ve added something about Adoption Awareness Month ending with Thanksgiving. I find that funny/not funny/complex, which is a tonal combination I find irresistible.

Good morning! Hey, just do this and I promise you'll thank me. Go to whatever music service you belong to and listen to Kim Deal's brand new album, Nobody Loves You More, while you're getting ready for your day or you're off to whatever. It's perfection.

Leading up to your GenX-er poster child friend, your boy JG, turning 60 on Jan 6, first pour one out for the very last Boomers turning 60 next month.

Dec 31, 1964 - Jan 1, 1965 is the passing of the torch. So as that ball drops, first, say “OK Boomer” followed by a “Whatever.” Thanks.

G.C. Waldrep's The Opening Ritual is out from Tupelo. As always, a massive book. It concludes his trilogy on chronic illness and faith. It's OK to start with this book. It's a pretty loose trilogy. Absolutely recommend. Here's the opening poem, that contextualizes the book's title:

My Life in Brutalist Architecture (Four Way Books 2024) is all last cycle, I know, but it still exists! And copies are still available!

Content areas: Family, Adoption, DNA, Neighbors.
Style: I couldn’t decide so I used all of them.

Available through all the regular channels! (I think)

Happy National Unfriending Day! (For Those Who Celebrate).

I'm celebrating by unfriending X!

November is National Adoption Month.

Here's a poem from My Life in Brutalist Architecture (Four Way Books), which came out earlier this year. It's my adoption book. It's the only way I could write it. I hope others can find something in it too.

Anne Carson's Wrong Norma. For me, the parts are better than the whole. BUT the parts are pretty magnificent. Also, any book with an Ashbery story like this is A-OK in my book.

Y'all, I guess this means I'm about to ascend. It's been cool. Maybe I'll find out if there's a pool on the top floor after all.
