My latest for @afp.com: a hike into the rainforests of eastern Indonesia to meet some of the country's last nomadic hunter-gatherers, under threat from the world's largest nickel mine as it destroys their homeland to provide materials for EVs and stainless steel.

More from @AFP's tsunami anniversary package.

Former rebel commander Muharram once led 3,000 men who spent decades fighting Indonesia's army in separatist Aceh.

But he is now a politician after the legacy of a devastating tsunami two decades ago brought peace.

Our @AFP latest:

Thousands of Indonesians have been enticed to other Southeast Asian nations in recent years for better-paying jobs, only to end up in the hands of scam operators.

Many have been rescued and repatriated, but dozens still languish in scam compounds.

One of the best things about @afpnews.bsky.social is its ability to cover key moments in history, specifically days like yesterday.

Here are some pictures from the wire of a historic day in Damascus. #Syria
December 9, 2024 at 7:09 AM
Israeli officials are reportedly considering taking territory inside #Syria, capitalising on the power vacuum after Assad fled.
December 9, 2024 at 2:01 AM
This remains speculation at present but Reuters is reporting that deposed #Syria leader Assad could have died in a plane crash.
December 8, 2024 at 8:30 AM
The administrators of #Syria state news agency SANA appear to have also fled the country.
December 8, 2024 at 5:52 AM
If you see any Assadist ghouls on the hellsite or, god forbid, on Bluesky, underplaying the regime's fall as "doom and gloom" or referring to its defeat as an "orderly retreat" (lol), it's a good time to use the block button. #Syria

Some of the defining images of the 13-year-long Syria civil war, as Assad flees Damascus and the opposition gets ready to take over the country, something we couldn't imagine saying just a few weeks ago.

Informed the colours here indicate altitude. So it looks like this plane, which left Damascus for western #Syria near the Alawite heartland of Latakia, has descended.

The reasons and persons onboard are unclear amid reports Assad has fled the capital.
December 8, 2024 at 3:15 AM
Syria is falling after Assad's party gained two seats in the surely free and fair parliamentary election in July. So weird!
December 8, 2024 at 3:08 AM
Flight that may be carrying #Syria president Assad (still unconfirmed) was heading to Alawite heartland of Latakia before making a sharp turn and then disappearing from the map, which could be turning off its transponder.

A reminder of why Sednaya prison's reported liberation is so significant.

It's where normal people like computer scientist Bassel Khartabil, who helped tell the world about the #Syria uprising, were secretly executed.

From Sam Dagher's book 'Assad or We Burn The Country'.
December 8, 2024 at 2:23 AM
Amid reports of some private flights in and out of #Syria in recent hours, just one flight can be tracked at the moment and it's a Russian charter plane seemingly heading east for the border. Destination unknown.

Trump's FBI director pick Kash Patel shared an altered photo of himself supposedly modelling boots two years ago and, in another Truth Social post, shared an image of himself as Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy, instead with the title "Meme-Lord". He has threatened to go after Trump's enemies.

Saw a whale in the wild for the first time off the coast of Kaikoura, New Zealand and it was truly epic.

The sperm whale, the world's largest toothed predator, comes up for air between 5 and 10 minutes then flicks its tail and dives back down into the ocean 🐋
