Three weeks, no picture of moth posted by me. Yes, the season is coming to an end, but still some interesting species are still on the wing, as this Asteroscopus sphinx. It came to the light yesterday in Berlin. #teammoth, #moth, #stadtnatur, #berlinbiodiversity, #berlin, #urbanbiodiversity

My observation of the day: Carabus granulatus heavily colonised by the mite Iphidosoma fimetarium. Naturally, I had no idea which mite this might be - iNaturalist owen_seeman provided the identification. 👍 iNaturalist #stadtnatur, #berlinbiodiversity, #berlin, #urbanbiodiversity

Our son now studies in Freiburg/Breisgau. Good reason for a visit to the city and the Belchen, one of the most important places within the hotspot area for lichens in Germany. Breathtaking indeed, even we found only 60 of the about 1000 species. Some highlights.

Nice Tree of Souls (Hericium coralloides) seen today close to Berlin. Despite intensive search, no Omatikaya Na’vi were seen, but Eywa stopped us to take it home. A strictly protected species here.

Not sure how i find this. Wonderful wild collected lichens to be used short term for decoration.

Eupsilia transversa is a quite common moth in Berlin. It hatches in fall and hibernates as an adult. In German, it's "Satellit-Wintereule" as beside the bright yellow or white spot, there are two satellites – so nice. #teammoth, #moth, #stadtnatur, #berlinbiodiversity, #berlin, #urbanbiodiversity

Weather is grey and cold in Berlin - our moth are not. October is still a great season with many very nice species on the wing. #teammoth, #moth, #stadtnatur, #berlinbiodiversity, #berlin, #urbanbiodiversity

Not very easy to find Craterellus cornucopioides, Totentrompete, around Berlin as we have mostly sour soils. But there are places and then there are many. Yesterday we had a nice success. Very lecker!

At my last day in Greece, I visited the late Bronze Age palace of Mycenae. Two cool lichens sticks out, Bagliettoa marmorea and (maybe) Lichinella nigritella.

Potentially, this is Enchylium tenax, Zähe Leimflechte, in Leonidio/Greece. A lichen that is associated with Nostoc algae. Rather small species that is very common on raw soils

Peribatodes umbraria and Problepsis ocellata, my highlights last night. The last mothing in Greece this year. #moth, #teammoth

Acherontia atropos, Totenkopfschwärmer, at Leonidio/Greece. A moth every moth-er wants to see. Yesterday was my night, and as expected, this massive critter emerging from the dark and hovering around the light is a stunner.

Few moth from Leonidio/Greece. Still a good number of species in the dry landscapes - and many I have never seen before. So nice! #teammoth, #moth

We always read about degraded landscapes - in northern Greece, due to land abandoning, there are large naturally regrown forests full of fantastic macro-lichens. Sadly these forests are without megaherbivores due to poaching.

Eleonorafalcons on Skyros/Greece. Absolutely fantastic birds.

In Kazachstan I have seen my lepidoptera species number 1000. Its Catocala repudiata endemic to south-east Kazachstan and adjacent China. We have so few Catocala species in Germany, that I forgot that there are so many more - over 20 in Central Asia.

Fishing in Kazachstan was a great adventure - and some observations came as a surprise. As this odonate-fishing ibisbill. Such a super cool bird.

We are fishing (yes for fish in water) in Kazachstan - what an adventure. Naturally the Lepi-LED is with me. Many moth without names in the colours of the steppe. iNaturalist has mostly those that occur also Central Europe.

Many people find moth boring - too small and brown. They are....but these two stand out and its so great when they come to the light (in Berlin). #teammoth, #moth, #stadtnatur, #berlinbiodiversity, #berlin, #urbanbiodiversity
