The Chinese ideograph 一 appearing at the very bottom, romanized as /yi/ and pronounced as a long E, meaning ‘one’ and marks the ‘starting point’ of a system. Coincidentally, it is looks like a ‘negative sign’. Moving to the very top, the ideograph 十 , romanized as /shi/ and pronounced more or less as ‘sure’, meaning ‘ten’ and marks the ‘end point’ of a system. Coincidentally, it looks like a ‘positive sign’. However,when a system reaches this point, it reverts back to ‘one’again and thus reversing its polarity to start the process all over again, and again, and again! All the intermediate steps, marked by the numbers 2 through 9, can be easily discerned, especially two and three. ( to be continued )
