What a superb Tristan und Isolde at the Deutsche Oper tonight.

Great concert from Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic. Janacek's Lachian Dances were beautiful but also fun.

Petrenko and the orchestra let rip in Bartok's Miraculous Manderin.

There were also fireworks during the Petruskha suite.

I'm trying my first Loch Lomond 18 tonight. I really like the standard 12 year old, so I've got high hopes.

I never used to be the biggest KFV fan, but the last couple of times I have seen him, I have been impressed. It was nice to hear Siegfried being sung rather than barked.

Musically splendid Siegfried at La Scala. I wasn't blown away by the production, but it wasn't terrible.

The Glyndebourne Parsifal was musically excellent. Beautiful conducting and playing from Ticciati and the LPO, along with great singing throughout.

However, the production was very poor with some really odd ideas.

A fine Turandot tonight at ROH with the three main singers in fine form. Gemma Summerfield as Liù was particularly impressive.

Musically wonderful Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Deutsche Oper. Some interesting ideas in the production. I'm not sure all of it was needed.
February 2, 2025 at 9:05 PM
I'm at the Deutsche Oper for Die Frau ohne Schatten.

Musically gorgeous Der Rosenkavalier at the Berlin Staatsoper tonight. Diana Damrau was stunning as the Marschallin.
February 1, 2025 at 9:36 PM
I'm at the Berlin Staatsoper for Der Rosenkavalier. Axel Kober conducts. It's a pretty decent cast. Although this cast list is slightly older.

I know it's me, but I have quite a cool relationship with the music of Sibelius. However, tonight's performance of the Lemminkäinen Suite conducted Dima by Slobodeniouk with the Berlin Philharmonic may have warmed things.

Wonderful Elgar Violin Concerto from Frank Peter Zimmerman and the Berlin Philharmonic.
January 31, 2025 at 8:18 PM
It's great to be back in Berlin for three nights of music.

Tonight, it's the Berlin Philharmonic playing the Elgar Violin Concerto and Lemminkainen Suite by Sibelius.

It's conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk. Frank Peter Zimmerman is the violin soloist.
