Sonoma State University has proposed eliminating Division II sports and about two dozen degree programs. “It's just watching something that you love die," one student said of the cuts.

SSU’s sports are a net financial gain for the university, according to a prominent Bay Area sports economist, who said cutting the programs could result in a loss for the fiscally troubled campus.

The widely expected move follows a pair of civil rights complaints filed within days of the Jan. 22 announcement outlining the end to all SSU sports programs, along with academic cuts and layoffs.
