There is a bound edition of the 1933 German equivalent of The Listener in my family. It starts off as you would expect - listings and articles. By December it is just another piece of Nazi propaganda.

It was lovely, Polly - and your owl impressions were wonderful!

Thanks so much, Polly! Was so sorry to have missed this, and now haven’t! Memories of my first week in Ambleside in September 2019, listening to the many owls in the university’s grounds. They were probably hooting around you as you gave your talk!

Happy memories of Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride in 1981. It took us 5 days to traverse Cornwall as we wanted to keep near the north coast - fabulous but quite tiring!

I thought it was just me!

This really doesn’t surprise me.I found many aspects of this book unconvincing but thought I must be wrong as it is so popular. Recovery from such an illness through walking? Description of walk itself. And the ridiculous mistaken identity thread. Especially now I’ve seen the photo. Great article.

Happy birthday Matthew! Hoping to get to Ambleside some time on this visit.
