Hugely this. I speak to way too many aspiring writers whose reading habits are terribly narrow. Genre writing is great, but wearing ‘genre blinkers’ risks the perpetuation of cliché. Writers shouldn’t always be looking to satisfy reader expectations. They should be looking to surprise and challenge.

Just put everything on iPlayer, including the vast archive, and charge a subscription. The cheapest Sky deal is £15 per month. The current TV license comes in at less than that.

The license fee feels so archaic. I’ve paid it loyally for nearly 40 years. The plain fact is though that I barely watch broadcast TV any more. Schedules are just not how people consume content now. The ‘threat’ of the detector van is ridiculous.
