That was the case for Brexit. I remember the day after the vote, a bum being interviewed and saying: ‘ we showed them’. Them being defined as everything/everyone he hated. Ten years later, I am sure he remains equally angry. But don’t underestimate how difficult of a narrative it is to counteract.

It could be a very long time before Portuguese football has another 5 minute period like this!

I heard an interview last month with Geoff Molson, the owner of the Montreal Canadiens. His uncle also owned the team in its heyday, when Geoff was a kid and going to the games. He said he had only been in the dressing room 3 times in his life because he felt it belonged to the players.

Départ groupé…c’est si difficile à écrire?

That is an unbelievably naive and self-contradicting article. It basically states that there is no problem with the system unless someone decides to ignore it, at which point the system does not work and nothing can be done. That is pretty much the definition of a non-functioning system!

*Bien mérité. Please know that this is completely in good faith (social media comments can always be misinterpreted!). I am learning Portuguese and I like when people take the time to correct me :)
January 22, 2026 at 1:53 PM
I got it :) I also suffer from the auto-correct sometimes coming up in French, sometimes in Portuguese and sometimes in English…

Things would be worse with Farage or the Tories, but it is fair to criticise his systematic bootlicking when it is obviously not working,

Tout le discours est un document historique dont la teneur devrait être enseignée à tous les élèves du Canada pour qu’ils puissent vraiment comprendre la place du pays sur l’échiquier mondial et ce que cela implique pour sa stratégie internationale.

Let’s say a 10% decline in gdp/capita. That brings us back to the 2000’s. Did the 2000s really feel like ‘unfathomable economic suffering’? And then, you can build from there on a much stronger basis, away from the dependency of an unreliable neighbour. It appears like the only rational choice.

You’re not choosing an easy distance…expect some suffering :)

That very well may be the case, but it is debatable. Balancing collective rights and individual freedoms is always inevitably complicated. So is determining the proper limits of what a secular state means in practice. But prima facie, I would not call the proposal inherently disturbing or egregious.

Do you think that people choosing to block the streets, without any permit, in front of the main church or well known Jewish owned shops in Montreal to ostentatiously pray are exercising their ‘religious freedom’? Really? Religious rights should neither be absolute nor infinite.

It is just about impossible to be served in French anywhere in downtown Montreal and it is not causing a problem. Feel a victim if you choose to, it has no grounding in reality .

Il faut dire que Hutson faisait face aux trios adverses les plus faibles lorsque jumelé avec X. Ça a été le contraire avec Guhle. Ceci explique cela…

I am not aware that I have dismissed the importance of individual rights in any way. The fact that you have somehow convinced yourself that I have says more about your preconceived ideas, and potentially your ability to debate with people that don’t completely share your views, than it does about me
April 25, 2025 at 4:59 PM
Balancing individual and collective rights is inherently difficult and does not lend itself to easy answers. I don’t have them, but I can see arguments on both sides. The Gazette doesn’t seem to anymore have the collective intellectual wherewithal to even conceive that it is a legitimate issue.

It is the lack of analysis, contextualization and balance that have in my view progressively seeped through at the Gazette. It has become an English version of the Journal de Montréal, raising anecdotes to the level of national scandals because rage baiting is seen as the most profitable way to go.
