I had the pleasure of teaching college students through Golden Apple last week!
We spent our time analyzing stereotypes in education and Dr. Bishop's work with Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Doors.
We had fun with stickers, children's books, new knowledge, and discussion.

If there is one unit I miss teaching juniors, it’s his. Kalief Browder should be turning 32 today. Watch his documentary on Netflix. Read his story in The New Yorker. Experience the pain his mother endured just to try to find justice for her son.

Nine more days with the Class of 2025 🎓
May 2, 2025 at 7:12 PM
One of the best days of the school year was spent with my A.P. African American Studies crew connecting their class with a discussion on Sinners with the associate director, Ammar Mohamad.
So much was celebrated about Black culture with this talk 🤎✊🏾

My AP African American Studies crew is currently studying Black Cinema (4.18).
On Friday, they are going to have a visit from the associate producer of Sinners, along with discussions of how the film displays EKs from the CED. I’m working on the doc now, and Friday should be amazing!

I know movie watchers are abuzz about Sinners, Ryan Coogler's newest creation.
I'm so proud of my former student, Ammar, who was an associate producer of the film!
It is so exciting watching him live his dream. Thank you to Ryan Coogler for taking him under his wing. I’m proud of both of you 💙

A.P. African American Studies has worked its way to examining the Black Panther Party. Students learned how the government targeted this community-centered group but stole many of its concepts. We ended today by examining The 10 Point Program and discussing what demands could be achieved.

Last week, I had the privilege of taking my A.P. African American Studies class to the Wright Museum. The space further ignited their passion for learning & educating others on the Black diaspora.
This week: Kids are enraged at orders to suppress, defund, and close museums teaching Black History.

I had the privilege of being an opening speaker to the social justice committee of the Michigan Education Association this evening. When I finished, the other speaker said, “Jessyca, you won’t believe this, but I use your story at speaking engagements. I always show this image.”

Today, while looking at the ‘Book, I saw this post. My analysis style for poetry has reached the desert in California! Seeing 8th graders being DOPE made my day 🤎✊🏾

MCTE Spring Celebration Conference: The night before, our fabulous keynote speaker emailed me asking for permission to mention me in her presentation. I said sure. I didn't expect to be sitting on the big screen, hearing support for getting AP AAS to C-AHS 🤎✊🏾 TY Carlin B-B!

Docs say it started near the roots of two teeth. Everything spread quickly at school. Now it's in my jaw, near the sinus cavity, and has my eye swollen. I am being sent to an oral surgeon next 😭
Friend, I'm sitting here, looking like Apollo Creed 💔
