My poem in the latest NCTE English Journal. Love to all theater the kids
Death Scene at the High School One day your child dies on stage. The boy cast as her lover cries no no no no no She says I love you, falls limp. Feels so real the audience gasps. Someone says even the principal choked up Afterwards, the kids pile giddy arms over legs into cars under parking lot lights, pancake makeup-faced toward the good McDonald's by the interstate. Hair sprayed stiff, black eyeliner thick like earthen holes. No child killed for real You once played Desdemona, your friend as Othello whispering jokes each time he smothered you with the pillow.
