Look at this! LOOK at this! Bike-specific construction mitigation on a designated local street bikeway!

I don't think I've seen anything of the sort anywhere in Halifax before?

Do I call 311 to say I'm thrilled?!

Our #kidicalmasshfx ride today was a comedy of errors.

Our kidical mass season was uplifting, inspiring. One kid flexed his wings and ditched the parents to ride at the front of the mass. One kid went from a bike seat, to riding training wheels, to riding two wheels.

Representation really matters

I loved wheel lights. I wish they were a little more durable, but I rode through absolutely everything that winter

I want to speculate traffic, and Mayor Fillmore, were stopped on Barrington. Which gave the opportunity to snap a heavily-zoomed photo of the buses stuck midblock on Morris.

It was frosh move in day. There were a zillion out of town families trying to navigate the city

I don't claim to be well informed on either politics or history, but it surprised me that our provincial representatives have no sworn duty to the people of Nova Scotia or to democracy.

Our provincial representatives have sworn to be faithful to the King. I doubt my priorities align with his

I knew I had a picture at a crazy angle. This was from my 311 email in June 2020 (one year planted). I contacted 311 three or four times about the tree

At some point 311 tells me not to worry about it; the city has been refunded for our tree.

I continue to water and fertilize chaotically.

Today I stood in the 1.5 sidewalk blocks of shade it now creates. The tree is still at an odd angle. But I'm so proud of the little tree who could

The next month saw our tree got worse and worse. It was clearly the worst looking tree on the street. A couple times a week I dribbled a dehumidifier bucket of water on it. Anything faster would run off.

A sentimental 🧵: We got a street tree late June 2019. The trees were dropped off, then planted the following day. I remember noting that our tree's thickest root jutted out sideways, not down into the root ball, and was lopped off short.

#KidicalMassHFX for your Sunday morning bike joy.

My joy was first family mass with everyone on their own bikes (thank you marshalls)

We went camping for a week
We saw lots of solo self-propelled, self-directed kids.
We saw lots of unattended phones charging in the bathrooms.
We saw lots of unlocked bikes.
We met our neighbours.
Seems like camping brings out the best, most trustworthy, most community oriented versions of ourselves

Construction impact mitigation on the bridge: installed strip lights because overhead lights are blocked by staging.

Can anyone comment on if this works well?

I'm angry.

"I biked when I was a kid/ my kids biked" is irrelevant.

Kids haven't changed. Vehicles have.

Back in the day, all vehicles had engine noise so you could hear an accelerating driver. Dashboards had buttons. No one had a smart phone. "Self driving" meant taking the bus. Hood height was low.

I don't think geofencing understands vertical space. This bike is tucked on the Halifax side of the tower in the bridge bike lane

Awww glad you enjoyed them! We've been getting increasingly creative with bike activities.. Once B realized he could bike to daycare *with ease* the forced passengering (because traffic) has been power struggles.

Last week was giant windmills.

The joy of riding a bike, shared.
The representation and visibility of seeing someone do the thing you want to do.
The community that creates space for kids to flex age appropriate autonomy.

Me last night, trying to take a photo of the balance bikes we're bringing

Child who has heretofore dumped any bike after a couple steps started gleefully puttering around on the red one.

So probably these, but also the predictability of kids is low....

The midtown bikeway project was one of my first public engagement sessions, back in 2019.
An engineer presented a couple traffic flow simulations. One with higher traffic, one with no increase in traffic. I asked about a decrease in traffic.
They don't model that situation

This is our diy paint -a-bell from last summer's Dartmouth kidical mass. Matte + internal ringer seem they'd have more longevity than v1!!
