Genuinely, covid is a huge consideration even now because it changed an entire generation's social, mental, and emotional development in a way that we truly just are not coming back from.

I worked in more of the social work side but my personal thoughts from what I've seen is that: teachers are exhausted and not supported so their standard have dropped, students have a lack of hope for the future so they don't try very hard, and the effects of covid can't be stressed enough.

On top of that: the ones that ARE reading are typically not reading books that require any sort of analysis. Which is better than nothing, but the point being that they are not good at picking up subtext because their books are spoon feeding the plot

I spent almost 10 years of my life working with teenagers. No one is exaggerating when people say that kids are graduating high school without being able to read. It became rare towards the end of that job for me to see kids required to write more than a paragraph in their assignments.
