Petro has now doubled down on his statement.

An…interesting choice to bring race into the discussion, when he could have simply said no one should discriminate against sex workers.

(The original statement in Spanish says “sexual condition” not “sexual orientation.”)

Today I attended an event on sex workers’ rights organized by the newly formed Direction for Women in Paid Sexual Activities in the Ministry of Equality of Colombia.

Multiple SWer activists spoke, and officials from multiple ministries affirmed the need to regulate the industry & protect rights.

For example, the US Populist Party of the late 19th century, aka the People’s Party, had some pretty radical and pro-democratic ideals, but was also nativist, opposing immigration and prone to anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

Any attempt to revive US populism has to avoid this.

For example, note the last line here from Colombian sex worker union ASTRASEX - a line you’d likely never hear from an Anglo sex worker group:

“ASTRASEX reiterated its firm intention to advance towards the regulation of sex work in Colombia, if and when it guarantees rights.”

The book even comes with a pull-out map of prostitution businesses in Bogotá in 1892!

These women were Europeans who migrated to Bogotá and became sex workers.

Police tried to expel Bertha Kalich, a Polish Jewish woman, from the country - on the grounds that although Colombian nationals could not be expelled, foreigners who showed “incorrigible moral deprivation” should be.

Olivas Lombana takes a firmly abolitionist stance, which leaves it feeling shallow to me, but the book is filled with rich historical detail and lots of great photos from the archives!

I think I ought to start sharing more of my reading & research!

So: tonight from Bogotá, Colombia, I am reading this book, “Prostitution and ‘Public Women’ in Bogotá, 1886-1930” by Andrés Olivos Lombana.

This post has attracted multiple nonsensical comments like this today from accounts I suspect are cosplaying as liberals in order to sow division among the left.
(and in this case, engaging in bl*ackface)

The right is desperate to create infighting among us. We won’t fall for it - block & report.

It seems that Trump’s win has emboldened the incels.
Last week, I got a message out of the blue on Telegram from a guy I had blocked on WhatsApp over a year ago.

He started sending me videos and messages like “hey sexy,” which escalated to insults when I didn’t respond, including…
