Continue making your voice heard, Kentucky, and ask your representatives to vote NO to SB 89, which would threaten our precious waterways in the Commonwealth. So far, your advocacy seems to be working! #VoteNOtoSB89

It’s a beautiful, sunny, release week for DRIFTWOOD. I’m gearing up for a week-long extravaganza of Hubbard events. Harlan and Anna’s story has never been more relevant—let’s all support the arts, support the humanities, and support the health of our beloved landscapes and riverscapes together. 💛🛶

In 1774, Phillis Wheatley wrote in a letter, "In every breast, God has implanted a principle, which we call love of freedom; it is impatient of oppression." Phillis wrote this out of a place of intense generosity, after having been enslaved. Let's not let her down.

It’s a fascinating (and troubling) time to be diving into the way Westward Expansion shaped American character. Tonight’s foray takes me into SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949).

To those on here who don’t know me, here’s my latest book, set to arrive this February. It’s a comprehensive biography of the artist, writer, and sustainability pioneer who has long enjoyed the moniker “Kentucky’s Thoreau.” From University Press of Kentucky. 💙

Salt water fish tank. A timely reminder that beautiful things can adapt to survival under unthinkable pressure and little-to-no resources. 💙

I was certainly conflicted by this one, and remain mystified by some of the changes from Edna Ferber’s book, but Giant (1955) was a fun place to start this #westernwomenproject. Check out Julie Gilbert’s absorbing study of making the film a reality.

I’ve been on a journey, recently, with films and books related to women and the American West. I’m sketching out two (!!) new books right now that are related to the subject. If you have recommendations of favorite westerns (books or movies) featuring strong female characters, do tell! #westerns
