mRNA vaccines are extremely important because they can be quickly “programmed” to target new diseases. They can also be “programmed” to fight non infectious things like cancer cells. There are dozens of mRNA vaccines undergoing clinical trials for different viruses (including bird flu) and cancers

When the vaccine's mRNA enters your body, your cells read the mRNA and build pieces (proteins) of the virus. The mRNA does not permanently attach to your DNA or alter it. Your immune system recognizes these virus pieces as foreign, and starts targeting (with antibodies) and destroying them.
