What has not been fabricated, however, are the actual injuries and deaths. The New England Journal of Medicine counts the number of dead Iraqi civilians at 151,000; in October of 2006 Great Britain’s medical journal Lancet placed the number at more than 650,000. The number, though uncertain, is real and large. The number of U.S. soldiers who have fallen as of August 18, 2008 is 4,145. The number of U.S. soldiers sent home with grave injuries is 13,453; another 17,056 less severely injured have remained on foreign soil.60 The number of people tortured is not at present known, but, again, the number is real. It may seem surprising that a fabricated universe can bring about devastating injury, but, of course, it is exactly the purpose of the real world system of laws to prohibit such injuries, so it is not surprising that fabricated worlds lead to widespread bodily harm.

Academic freedom is the freedom of a teacher or researcher in higher education to investigate and discuss the issues in his or her academic field, and to teach and publish findings without interference from administrators, boards of trustees, political figures, donors, or other entities. Academic freedom also protects the right of a faculty member to speak freely when participating in institutional governance, as well as to speak freely as a citizen.

Received an email announcing the new NIH initiative to fund researchers investigating the causes and treatments for autism. Researchers, please do not be complicit in this.
Text: Announcing the NIH Autism Data Science Initiative Research Opportunity May 27, 2025 Today, NIH released a Research Opportunity Announcement for the Autism Data Science Initiative (ADSI). We are spotlighting this other transaction here as it is a high priority for leadership within NIH and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It also encompasses several efforts of general interest for NIH supported research including supporting data resources, participant privacy, and research replicability/validation. Background ADSI seeks to bring together diverse data resources to explore possible contributors to the causes of autism. ADSI will also work to identify how existing treatments/interventions are used and better understand their outcomes to inform the design of future clinical studies. All use of data in in the initiative will be compliant with privacy and confidentiality requirements and applicable federal and state laws and regulations.

More than 20 people were killed on Sunday and more than 100 wounded when Palestinians who had gathered overnight in the hope of obtaining food from an aid distribution center in Gaza came under fire, according to local health officials. The incident was the latest episode to ensnarl the Israeli-backed initiative to establish aid distribution sites run by American security contractors in the enclave. The Israeli military initially said it was unaware of any injuries from Israeli fire at the site, but a military official later briefed reporters that troops had fired warning shots toward “suspects” who approached them about a kilometer away.

Text: I suspected I would have to leave when I curled up at home, watching the prevailing rallying cry across social media: that they will come for citizens next—not that they’ve already come for us. For a significant number of indignant Americans, the panic over free speech and First Amendment rights is but a fear of finding themselves caught on the wrong end of the bruise. In this country, our crushed nonresident alien bodies tend to hold no value except as an ominous sign for what might befall an American, our cuffs a mere foreshadowing of hypothetical ones around a US citizen’s wrist.

Statement from the Executive Council of the Graduate Center PhD Program in Sociology on the detention of Mahmoud Khalil and our call on the GC President and CUNY Chancellor to protect our CUNY students 1/
The Executive Committee of the Graduate Center PhD Program in Sociology condemns the recent detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident and graduate of Columbia University. Mr. Khalil is an outspoken activist and advocate for Palestine, and he was a mediator for student groups protesting the genocide in Palestine. Freedom of speech is a core principle of any democratic society and is enshrined in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. By detaining Mr. Khalil, with the intention to unlawfully deport him, the Trump administration has committed an egregious, unprecedented violation of this right. This sets a dangerous precedent, which has already been extended to other individuals. These actions by ICE, at the behest of the Trump administration, impact the rights and safety of members of our campus community, including our many international students and other scholars. It is imperative that we protect our students from being retaliated against for the content of their speech, or for their immigration status, especially as they attempt to ensure human rights are defended throughout the world. We reaffirm our collective commitment to protect the rights of our students as they exercise their constitutional rights, and call on the CUNY Chancellor and Graduate Center President to do the same.

Jeffries statement on Mahmoud Khalil: Mahmoud Khalil is a legal permanent resident whose wife, an American citizen, is eight months pregnant. To the extent his actions were inconsistent with Columbia University policy and created an unacceptable hostile academic environment for Jewish students and others, there is a serious university disciplinary process that can handle the matter. In the context of the arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil, DHS must produce facts and evidence of criminal activity. Absent evidence of a crime, such as providing material support for a terrorist organization, the actions undertaken by the Trump administration are wildly inconsistent with the United States Constitution. A judge has blocked this egregious removal pending further action and, along with Attorney General Letitia James, we will continue monitoring this developing situation closely.
