When I first put solar panels on my house, I was opening the app all the time to see what was going on with them. Were they generating? How much? How much power was I using?

While that obsession has calmed down, now I find myself doing the same with our ships using sails…

We’re just days away from taking delivery of our fourth wind-equipped ‘AeroPower’ vessel.
The first ever newbuild, and the first tanker, to have BAR Technologies WindWings fitted!

With 2.5x the wing area of an A380, we expect to save over 1,200 tonnes of fuel and 3,800 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Something weird with the location data on Thameslink today, around St Pancras/Farringdon area -

Both this morning and now on my way home, my phone ‘Automatic’ time zone has decided I’m in Jerusalem.

A bit of a surprise to look at my watch and see I’ve lost two hours 😳😅
May 19, 2025 at 5:55 PM
Yea that’s exactly right.
The whole wing can be rotated 360, then the leading and trailing element trimmed to optimise the camber.
The gaps between elements help prevent stall.
April 11, 2025 at 7:48 AM
Sneak peak at just the middle element of our three-element wings you can see the people for scale near the top! This is 37m long and 10m wide, with another 5m element either side for total 20m width.

For comparison, our rotor is 24m by 4m.

Our ship in June will have three of these wings 🤓

Yes it is still winter.
Yes I did still sow some seeds at the allotment today.

And yes, I did finally put a salvaged curved glass shower door to use to help add some warmth to the seeds!

In case you were wondering, the next ship in this series is in preparation now before delivery to us.
And yes, this one does have sails.
And yes, the sails are enormous.
And yes, I am very very excited 🤓

All in, I spent on average £1.16 per day across the year.

Feel like this is pretty good going tbh!
February 2, 2025 at 8:52 PM
My energy use sits at 6,100 kWh imported, and 2,100 kWh exported.
Additionally I generated 3,900 kWh of solar at home, putting my net consumption at 7,900 kWh for home, heating and driving.

It’s cool that my average unit rate for buying electricity was half what I’ve been paid for selling it!
February 2, 2025 at 8:52 PM
Doing my 2024 home energy stuff because I finally have time for it!

To start, here’s how my import and export has been distributed across the day.

Import almost exclusively off-peak, and export prioritised during the evening peak.

Think the train tracking thingy is broken in Flitwick.

Two days in a row my train has been ‘delayed’ but then springs to life once it leaves Harlington.

Screenshots taken just seconds apart.

I’m finding it interesting to see the tracking of CO2 emissions for my home from Predbat.

Today has been around 1.5 kg of CO2, and tomorrow is projected to add just 0.4 kg more!
Plenty of wind tonight 🤓

Also at number 10!
This is wild 🤪
December 29, 2024 at 12:31 PM
Congratulations UK for finishing Netflix.
December 29, 2024 at 12:29 PM
Quite a difference from the midnight prediction, mainly because I didn’t have a load of laundry washing and drying last night I reckon!

Cool to see it tracking and adjusting to my actual use, and the energy execution plan changing as it goes.
December 27, 2024 at 10:34 AM
Then diving into my smart home stuff putting energy automation in place using ‘Predbat’.

It integrates energy use and solar generation predictions, then combines it with tariff info to map the best energy execution plan. Mostly operating locally on my little device 🤓

Thoroughly pleasant Boxing Day.

First, constructing this hand-cranked film projector that has a tiny dynamo and LED, and even an adjustable lens for focus…

Morrisons looking a bit manky in the bread department.
Is this why we have plastic wrapped everything?
December 23, 2024 at 11:32 PM
But now look at the digital twin with rotorsails -

The same wind and waves, but a very different ’wind factor’ as we see the vessel’s speed being increased by up to 1.3 knots!
December 14, 2024 at 3:06 PM
This is the output for the current vessel’s actual voyage.

The strength of wind and waves (blue) is shown against their impact on vessel speed (orange).

Note here the impact of wind tends to be small, with 0.1-0.2 knots impact either way.
December 14, 2024 at 3:06 PM
From directly above, you can see these two foundations are on the ship’s centreline.

This ship has been delivered ‘wind-ready’ with these foundations, cables etc. in place for easy installation in the future.

It paves (waves?) the way for our first wind-fitted ship in February!

When viewed from higher up, that white barrel looks out of place - but what you don’t see is the steel structure beneath it!

This is the foundation for one of our sails, with the other in red just in front of the two white boxes near the middle of the ship.
December 3, 2024 at 8:53 PM
Major milestone this week as we took delivery of the first of 16 vessels in our series of chemical tankers!

This was the first newbuild project that our team had real input on, identifying measures to take this already efficient vessel to another level.

See that white ‘barrel’ near the front?
December 3, 2024 at 8:53 PM
In case you’re curious, here’s some (admittedly not detailed) information from some of these trials.

In this case we set the RPM for the ship’s engine and did two runs in opposite directions.

We can assess against fuel consumption, rpm and propulsion power which should align. In theory…

I don’t know what came over me today, but had a mad tidy and reorganise and for the first time in years all my theatre programs are out of a cardboard box!

Need to go more and keep adding to these 🤓
