That exchange points us to the Holy at unexpected moments in our day, and helps remind us what it is we value, and then it helps us ask ourselves: what the Spirit is teaching me through this sacrifice? 🕊️

Blessed Lent, everyone 💜

While *adding* spiritual/charitable practices can be a lovely alternative to the sacrificial traditions of Lent, there IS something to be said for that quick internal exchange you have with yourself when you reach for your Usual Thing, and remember that you’ve given it up.

-Try doing “biblical modesty” for Lent. Find the modesty passages, and live by those as best you can. No fine jewelry, no hair salons, no brand names (but, interestingly enough, leggings, crop-tops, and swimsuits of all kinds are totally acceptable, as long as they’re not designer! 🙃)

-Give up discretionary shopping entirely. Were you intrigued by the “No-Buy 2025” movement, but couldn’t do it for a whole year? Try it just for Lent!

-Pick a thing you buy often, and give up buying it from big box stores. Seek out more ethically-sourced or local alternatives. (I have a feeling many of us in Canada may *incidentally* be giving up many US products for Lent this year… 😅🍁)

-Pick a streaming service to give up, and fill that time with spiritual practices and trips to the local library.

...Sacrifice seeing your own (or familiar) perspectives reflected back to you.
March 4, 2025 at 5:46 PM
-Try giving up reading books/watching movies/consuming content by the people you usually hear from. If you usually read novels by straight white ladies, try reading some queer or BIPOC authors, or watching films/tv shows by creators who don’t often show up in your “recommended” feeds...
March 4, 2025 at 5:46 PM
...And then, pay attention to what challenges you about this sacrifice. What do you think God wants you to learn about how you've been taught to think and talk about food?
March 4, 2025 at 5:46 PM
-Try giving up *talking about* food. Outside of, “I’m making this for supper,” “Can you pick up eggs on your way home?” or, “Thanks, that was delicious!” Try just *not talking* about food for 40 days...
March 4, 2025 at 5:46 PM
...But since many folks DO find value in the spiritual practice of giving something up, what are some other things we might try?)

This is how you sleepwalk into an impunity crisis, hundreds of missed opportunities to take a moral stand.

Here is a quote from St. Augustine that is apropos here

EVERY. TIME. these people *tell* you what they value, know that, *in practice,* it’s the exact opposite.

They said it was about preventing unelected bureaucrats from gaining too much power, then put an unelected bureaucrat and some skeezy frat boys in charge of, well, anything they want.
February 13, 2025 at 5:48 PM
They said it was about “fiscal responsibility,” then added $4 trillion in debt.

They called the left “facists” and “n@zis,” and then cheered when they saw a s*eg he*l.

They said it was about the price of eggs, then the price of eggs skyrocketed.

They said it was about the price of gas, then the price of gas started to climb.

They said it was about controlling inflation, then inflation spiked.

They said it was anti-semitic to protest genocide in Gaza, but called the neo-n@zis at Charleston “very fine people” and kept their distance when hate-criminals attacked synagogues.
February 13, 2025 at 5:48 PM
They told us it was about “her emails,” but shrugged when towers of classified documents were stored in the tackiest residential bathroom you’ve ever seen.

They said it was about “locking her up,” and then elected a man with 34 felony counts.
February 13, 2025 at 5:48 PM
They said it was about keeping kids safe, then they disbanded the Federal School Safety Clearninghouse (which Trump himself created after the Parkland school shoot*ng).
February 13, 2025 at 5:48 PM
They call themselves the party of personal freedom, and then restricted the healthcare options available to over half the population, leaving women with children at home bleeding to death in parking lots and 11-year-olds delivering r@pists’ babies.

They call themselves the party of personal freedom, but want to tell you who you can and can’t marry.

They call themselves the party of personal freedom, but want to restrict no-fault divorce, forcing folks to stay in marriages one or both partners are desperate to leave.

They said it was about preventing “DEI initiatives from leading to the hiring of unqualified candidates,” and then appointed the most unqualified cabinet the US has ever seen.
