It is a dystopian novel written during McCarthyism, and is set in a future where all books are outlawed, and even set on fire. Critics have sought to ban it because of Bradbury's use of profanity, as well as for allegedly going against religious beliefs - in the book, a bible is among the books burned. Book bans infringe upon our right to free speech and may also violate New York State law, particularly when they disproportionately target books written by or about people of color, women, or LGBTQIA+ individuals. Schools should be vibrant, inclusive places where ideas are openly discussed and debated - not sites of secrecy that limit access to diversity of thought. The Eastpost-South Manor School District must uphold its legal duty and ethical obligations to protect students' rights.
