Young driver deaths on pace to reach 10-year high in Mass.
This year is already on track to be the deadliest in recent memory for drivers under the age of 21.

Then there's DISTRACTED DRIVING. @rebeccarobbins.bsky.social of Harvard Med told me her research found that 70% of young drivers reported using or making long glances toward their phones while driving.

Most high schoolers aren't getting enough sleep, too, which makes things worse

AAA's Schieldrop also told me seat belt usage is on the decline and speeding is on the rise. When you combine the two, the results are deadly.

About 35% of all teen crashes involve speeding, he said.

So what gives?

There's not one clear answer, but the trend is clearly driven by boys and young men. Of this year's 22 young driver deaths, 18 were male and 4 were female.

"We really need to pay extra attention to our male drivers," Mark Schieldrop of AAA told me.

22 drivers under the age of 21 died behind the wheel during the first 8 months of this year.

That's 80% higher than the yearly average for the same period over the past decade and puts on track to surpass the deadliest year in recent memory in 2022, when 24 died.

Bad Bunny is nearing the end of his 30-show residency in San Juan, called ‘No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí’ (I don’t want to leave here). But at Yale Unviersity, a new class on the Puerto Rican megastar is just getting started. I have the story today on @theworld.org.
