Wow--just checked on CDC's social vulnerability index for the first time this year, and this disclaimer. It's...something. "immutable biological reality"?

Well, my Intro GIS class appears to be pretty daunting for at least three of my students.

Nice list of interventions from @davarianbaldwin.bsky.social that universities can consider to be better neighbors and invest in their communities. Plus a public art project at Yale that compared the university's endowment to local investment.

Just whipped up (with maybe just a little AI help) a Google Earth Engine script for class today that allows my Intro GIS students to quickly calculate the mean temps for a point in the 1940s compared to today, using ERA5 data. Will see how it goes! code.earthengine.google.com/c8157566133a...

Also my first time working with raster stacks in #rstats. Crazy that it can extract values for these points from 73 years of global scaled data in under two seconds.

Continuing to tinker with Google's cloud optimized ERA5 dataset: calculated the mean minimum temperatures for July from 1950-2023 and then extracted the value for each city where I've lived for more than a month (or so). Messy (R2s range from 0.1 to 0.25), but the trend is definitely clear.
