Who are UN climate talks really serving? 🤔

What we see:

🚩 Big polluters as sponsors
🚩 Fossil fuel executives in presidency teams
🚩 Multinationals included in negotiation
🚩 Fossil fuel phase-out missing from the agenda
🚩 Spotlight on corporate-driven "solutions" e.g. carbon offsets

By 2024, BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street and Fidelity held nearly one-eighth of the Amsterdam stock exchange. SOMO research shows they rarely support climate action, unlike Dutch funds. This reflects not just pension fund outsourcing, but financial globalisation eroding democratic control.
New research | 4 largest US asset managers, like BlackRock and Vanguard, now manage 1/8th of all Dutch listed companies.

That’s over 10 times more than the five largest Dutch asset managers.

They are much less likely to vote in favour of climate resolutions compared to Dutch asset managers.

The Netherlands halt 3 arms export licences to Israel, admitting “risk of undesirable end use.” That’s code for war crimes.

But 7 licences remain. Dog exports continue. So does trade with Israeli settlements.

We are in court on 3️⃣Sep to break the full chain.

No more weapons, dog exports or deals.

🇪🇺🚗 The EU car industry is NOT in crisis. It’s profitable, powerful, and using its influence to delay climate action.

Our new research reveals how the interests of the car industry have steered EU policy to put profits before people and the planet.

Great article, but I would also emphasise that the Silicon Valley model has resisted unions from the outset, embedding practices that systematically undermine unions and entrench corporate control. Despotism in the workplace breeds despotism in society.

‘Headed for technofascism’: the rightwing roots of Silicon Valley
The industry’s liberal reputation is misleading. Its reactionary tendencies – celebrating wealth, power and traditional masculinity – have been clear since the dotcom mania of the 1990s

Leaving the digital sphere vulnerable to the whims of a handful of Tech billionaires threatens democracy.

Together with @wafeurope.bsky.social, we call on the EU to ensure Meta’s changes won't lead to increased disinformation and the potential to incite violence.
