A friend from Facilities brought this hat by for me that he made. It’s a sharp looking hat and a really kind gesture. While I do miss working from home, going to the office does have its perks sometimes.

My city does an annual Art in the Park. It’s always pretty great.

I bought art.

Even my far-from-best seller work appears on this AI training list. I’m not sure why I feel shocked, but I certainly do.

That second entry is an academic article I was second author on. Geez.

To the AERA reviewer who said my paper would benefit from a decision flowchart: message received and you were absolutely right.

To the AERA reviewer who said they couldn't see any significance of my work: 🤪

Giving a workshop for students tomorrow on interviewing for jobs. I'm not sure which of these two slides is my favorite. But I do know that I appreciate being in a workplace where I can be me without second guessing myself.

Hmmmm. Just pulled them out of my pocket and now something is off with the audio quality of my AirPods.

What could it be?

Help me out here as I’m not a beer drinker. I saw this beer RV on my drive home the other day.

What, specifically, about an oiled up, roided out, 90’s Hulk Hogan in a banana hammock and knee-high boots waving a USA flag makes people want a beer?

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

We talk a lot about the dangers of preemptive compliance to authoritarians and other petty jerks. I L-O-V-E the stories of folks who push back.

🙌 to Cards Against Humanity as they push back against dehumanization, exploitation, and preemptive compliance.

Fun footnote: They seemed to really enjoy seeing my hand-written + screenshot notes and note taking system that I developed during my PhD. One comment about the most memorable aspect was "How much you had wrote down in the big binder." 🤣

Dude, I love students. They are the best.

One thing I DIDN'T accomplish in 45 minutes is to provoke conversation about study skills with their friends outside of class. If you hear something cool or wacky or helpful or cute, you tell your friends about it. I want to provoke some conversations outside the session around study approaches.

Takeaway 3: You can only accomplish so much in a 45 minute classroom talk.

But holy hell, sometimes you do better than you think! I was NOT expecting change people's reported behaviors. But I needed to ask. The VAST majority of students reported that they tried something different after my talk. 🤩

I think another help here was that I also acknowledged that cramming sessions work...if you are tested right away after the session. I think it was good to acknowledge that sometimes we don't prepare very well and get away with it. But to remember something over time takes repeated practice.

Takeaway 2: Student know lots of study approaches, but not always which ones are more effective.
In the open-ended feedback they mentioned knowing about study practices but the session helped clarify when to try what. One mentioned using the methods already but enjoyed learning why they work

Takeaway 1: Practical is Good.
I know a lot of CTL folks have a talk like this. I know the learning science is super cool to explore. But I'm not convinced students care about that. I focused on two things and made them dead practical. Retrieval practice and spaced practice. Ended with note taking.

I recently did a Study Skills workshop for a biology class of about 25 students. It was a prototype and I wanted to test some ideas to see if they might work. What's the point in talking about studying if nobody actually tries the advice? Got some feedback 2 wks later. Heres my 3 main takeaways
