But I wonder if there's a way in-canon to learn Force-wielding without being either a moralizing pussy, or a sadistic psycho about it.

I have injured some number of tendons in the crook of the elbow of my drawing arm, some kind of repetitive stress injury given to me for the crime of attempting to excel. But at least I had a few old scribble pages kicking around at least.
