The New York Times investigation found that just 13 percent of the men sent to El Salvador’s gulag had a serious accusation or conviction in any part of the world. Of the 40 men the Times interviewed and investigated deeply, just 3 had criminal accusations beyond immigration and traffic offenses.

A rumor spread that if one of the detainees died they’d have to release all the others. The conditions were so harsh that one inmate, an Uber Eats driver from Milwaukee, tried to commit suicide as an attempt to free the others.
