Really enjoyed this conversation with Michelle Deutchman @ucfreespeech.bsky.social, which touched on the @aacu.org presidents' statement (approaching 600 signatories!) and other things.

Thanks to @byjoshmoody.bsky.social @insidehighered.com for opportunity to clarify my thoughts. It's been a sector-level failure to defend higher ed against gov't censorship, not the fault of single associations/presidents. If that's changing, it's great news.

This is not true about Texas's DEI ban; it doesn't restrict conference travel or student recruitment. That didn't stop Gov. Abbott from threatening to fire TAMU's president, who responded that he'd now honor the "intent" and "spirit" of the law rather than what it actually says.

Some parts of WASC president Jamienne Studley's comments to @erickelderman.bsky.social in this @chronicle.com article are reassuring. But this quote is definitely not. It's pretty much textbook "comply in advance" reasoning. www.chronicle.com/article/majo...

Also in 2024, efforts to censor higher education moved away from flashy press conferences about the "war on woke," and instead focused on stealth strategies to exert ideological control over all aspects of university life, including those that don't require new laws.

We've got a comprehensive list of all educational gag orders and higher ed censorship bills passed in 2024, an updated Index, and lots of charts, analysis, etc.
A big takeaway: for the first time, more higher ed bills sought to restrict university autonomy vs. classroom speech.

My friend Chris couldn't be bothered to show up at yesterday's Board of Trustees meeting -- even remotely -- but he's happy to take credit for censorship committed in his name. What else is new?

UNC-Chapel Hill's board chair fights "administrative bloat" by defunding one group of staff (DEI office) to fund another (campus police).
"Administrative bloat" is a morally bankrupt concept that is being weaponized to empower viewpoint discrimination.

I'm late to the party, but this is a great statement from the Association of Governing Boards about the duty of governing boards to preserve the institutional autonomy of their universities from political interference. bit.ly/3Qkk4x6

Key takeaway from @tressiemcphd.bsky.social, drawing on a Lumina/Gallup survey of college students: massive majorities of students, including 61% of Republicans, don't want to go to college in states with educational gag orders. www.nytimes.com/2024/03/28/o...
