In 2019, all of England & Wales had 671 homicides. That same year, Americans killed 712 people with bare hands—41 more, no weapon at all. Our issue isn’t the tool. It’s that we’re violent. Culturally, we’re broken.

Gun violence here is cultural, not legal. America is a violent nation. Our suicide rate is nearly double the UK’s, and 2 of 3 US gun deaths are suicide. Rampage violence is the same story. Until we face culture, laws won’t solve it.

I’m not here to fight. Too often political views become identity, so data feels like an attack. We see it with vaccines too—evidence is clear, yet people lash out. It’s unfortunate, because real progress needs civil discourse, especially among the well-educated.

I respect your concerns, but anecdotes aren’t the same as data. In Utah, you must be 21 to buy a handgun or get a concealed carry permit, permit holders pass strict checks, and there’s never been campus violence involving one.

Hello. I’ve written many of Utah’s gun laws. Utah has about 9/10 of its gun deaths as a suicide. We study our gun violence and write laws addressing gun violence. Conceal carry had nothing to do with the shooting at UVU.
