How do cells sense & respond to lipid imbalances? What happens when a disease-relevant enzyme is blocked? Shiying Huang investigates phosphoinositide lipids with the Balla lab & discovers an integrated cellular response that boosts alternate lipid synthesis pathways! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Came in to this lovely surprise today — the lab is 10 years young this summer! 🍾
I’m so grateful to all trainees past and present for getting us to where we are and taking us to a bright and exciting future of #lipidtime #chembio discoveries!

Had a fun #lipidtime chat with @morstein.bsky.social at #ACSSpring2025 — only the head groups are shown here but you can infer that the acyl tails are different lengths in these two species

🚨New preprint: There's this overlooked phospholipid with 3 acyl tails called NAPE that is made during ischemia. We identified its interactome & found it regulates lactate flux, suggesting metabolic functions in response to hypoxia. Congrats to Dylan Chiu! doi.org/10.26434/che... #lipidtime #chembio

Had a blast at UT Chemistry and exploring Austin, including the impressive LBJ presidential library, which tells powerful stories of how our leaders both rose to the occasion and fell short in another turbulent era. Thanks to Ken Hsu for hosting me! @brianbelardi.bsky.social @lbjlibrary.bsky.social

Amid the swirling news, hosting Jeff Kelly for Cornell’s Halocarbon Lecture was a most welcome distraction: a stunning story of biochemistry and molecular design leading to first-in-class therapies for amyloid disease by correcting a protein misfolding pathway!

Our latest story: a protein-protein interaction between an E3 ubiquitin ligase and an autophagy adaptor affects liquid-liquid phase separation and sequestration of a key mediator of antioxidant signaling — but not via ubiquitination! Bravo to Lin Luan and Xiaofu Cao!
