Text excerpted from the Economic Policy Institute’s 2022 CEO Pay Gap report: Hypothetically speaking, if Tesla managed to sell 100% of all cars sold in the United States by the end of the next decade, and it made a per-car profit roughly 10 times that of the current per-car profit of General Motors, Ford, and Fiat-Chrysler, then Tesla’s profits would be large enough to justify the current valuation of its stock. If it does not achieve a 100% market share and an extraordinarily high level of profitability, its stock price will fall significantly. This means Musk will have been able to personally claim $23.5 billion in purchasing power in 2021 that was never matched by economic activity—and certainly not activity that redounds to the benefit of Tesla shareholders whose wealth was diluted to make room for his stock options.
