To this day, I choke up thinking that my daughter is protected against cervical cancer because of a vaccine. Literally prevents cancer. Imagine how many girls (and boys) this shot will save from that trauma. MAGIC is right!

This painting was passed down through the Tanner family, and when Lewis Tanner Moore, went to school at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, he brought it with him and displayed it in his dorm.

A genteel crowd observes this caged animal, who previously starred in a traveling circus, at feeding time. Pomp, who the Philadelphia Inquirer described as “tame as a kitten,” does not appear very ferocious as he reaches out a paw to an offered hunk of meat.

When Tanner was a student at the PA Acad. of the Fine Arts, studying with Thomas Eakins (1844-1916), he professed a desire to become an animal painter. Eakins encouraged his students to visit the Phil Zoo to study animals from life, and Pomp, an old lion, became a favorite subject of Tanner’s.

Today is Henry Ossawa Tanner's 166th birthday! One of the most notable African American artists at the turn of the twentieth century, Henry Ossawa Tanner is the granduncle of Lewis Tanner Moore, whose collection is on display in "Yesterday's Dreams Are Real."
